RIX’s Methanol-to-Hydrogen (M2H2) hydrogen generator systems enable the integration of advanced fuel reforming and hydrogen purification technologies directly on-board mobile platforms, including marine vessels and heavy-duty logistic vehicles. The M2H2 Series is specifically designed to displace stored compressed hydrogen to support primary propulsion, auxiliary power systems, cold ironing and bunkering, and provides high purity (>99.97%) hydrogen on-demand that is scalable to support megawatt (MW) solutions.
The RIX Feedstock Mixing System provides precise mixture control for proper operation of the RIX M2H2 Hydrogen Generation systems using a specific ratio of Methanol to Deionized Water feedstock to create optimum efficiency and performance.
The world’s first methanol fueled towboat is set to join the fleet of Maritime Partners LLC based in Metairie, Louisiana to meet the pressing demand for sustainable towboat operations. The vessel, the M/V Hydrogen One, will offer 1,800 horsepower (1.4MW), that is exclusively and continuously powered by ten (10) PowerCell PS185 fuel cell modules, and have an operational range of 550 miles before refueling. The M/V Hydrogen One will be IMO 2030 compliant and meet the USCG’s Subchapter M requirements. Ten RIX Industries M2H2-1800 reformers will use a feedstock mixture of methanol and water to produce fuel cell grade hydrogen on-demand at the point of consumption on-board the vessel, thus eliminating the logistical challenges and costs of storing and transporting compressed hydrogen.

Shipbuilders and Operators face a high bar in the shift to greener technologies – specifically, the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) goal to reduce carbon emissions by at least 50 percent by 2050. Hydrogen-on-demand is the key, preferred future fuel, and methanol as a hydrogen carrier is the best way to deliver it on-board, safely and efficiently. Hydrogen-on-demand eliminates the complexities of compressed cryogenic liquid hydrogen by tapping into safe, stable methanol as a feed source. Existing diesel tanks instead store liquid methanol at ambient conditions, and hydrogen systems drop into existing shipboard infrastructures with minimal retrofit while meeting decarbonization mandates.
RIX Industries’ Methanol-to-Hydrogen (M2H2) generator systems deliver the highest volumetric density for hydrogen storage while providing the lowest cost and best logistic storage solution when compared to high pressure gas or liquid hydrogen alternatives.
