Methanol-to-hydrogen (M2H2) is a practical solution to decarbonization in maritime markets. This smarter approach eliminates the need for massive amounts of liquid hydrogen stored at cryogenic temperatures, or the heavy footprint and risk of gaseous hydrogen stored in extremely high-pressure tanks. Methanol – and so, methanol-to-hydrogen – is available all over the network of U.S. inland and intracoastal waterways and global shipping ports. There is no need to develop alternative fuel fueling stations all along the routes traversed by tugboats, towboats, and barges. Today, M2H2 systems can be paired effectively with Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells to demonstrate the possibilities of an environmentally sound shipping industry, spanning a broad range of portside and shipboard power applications.
