BENICIA, CA, RIX Industries, Inc. (RIX) announced that it has been awarded a contract for South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). RIX IndustriesRIX will play a key role in supporting the next generation of Auxiliary Submarine Rescue Vessel. ASR-II will strengthen the existing Cheonghaejin-class submarine rescue ships. The Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy has commissioned nine KSS-II class submarines (Type 214) as well as building the new class of large submarine, the KSS-III.
RIX has been involved with the ASR-I program for over two decades. During that time, ASR-I has had two successful missions salvaging a sunken naval submarine and semi-submersible. In 1998, a North Korean Yugo-class submarine was salvaged after sinking while being towed to port. In 1999, ASR-I salvaged a North Korean Taedong-class semi-submersible, when it was destroyed in an engagement with the ROK Navy.
DAPA most recently, launched the ASR-II project in November 2015 in partnership with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). Missions include rescuing trapped sailors in submarines, naval operation support for submarines, underwater research and mapping support, and recovery of sunk vessels. It is equipped with a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) that operates up to 500 meters, and a rescue chamber that can accommodate up to 9 people.
“RIX Industries is pleased to have been awarded this important contract, which continues our long-standing relationship with the Republic of Korea (ROK) and ongoing support of critical naval platforms,” commented George Wood, Executive Vice President of RIX Industries, Inc. “Since the inception of Submarine Rescue ships, RIX’s commitment to providing the most advanced and reliable technologies has ensured our ongoing participation, which continue to receive strong global support.
